Distance control when Putting
As we are into the summer season greens should be getting quicker and firmer so it is very important to judge the speed of the green. If everyone could keep the dreaded three putt off their card it would dramatically lower your score and handicap. Here are two putting drills to help with speed and control on the putting green:-
Putt at a target not the hole
Don't immediately try to make putts, hit your putts at a ball marker, not at the hole. To start with, set down 3 ball markers at 10-foot intervals and alternate putting to the different markers. This method helps with distance control as well as the aim as the marker is a lot smaller than the hole.
When you feel comfortable putting at a hole try the next tip:-
The Eyes Closed Test
Take 3 putts within 15 foot at the same hole. Next try the putt three more times only this time with your eyes closed. By closing your eyes you are relying on rhythm and control, which will help you to feel the length of the putt. When you feel confident doing this, when your eyes are still closed, try and guess how close you are to the hole again so you can gauge your distance from the hole.
