Telford Hotel & Golf Resort
Captain's Log

It has been a successful year at Telford with membership numbers bucking the national trend and improving over the year.

This has been brought about by an ever improving course, great awareness of the sport and a junior recruitment drive that has increased junior and adult memberships, plus other custom through the hotel.

Our yearly match against London based Little Hay was, again, an overwhelming success for Telford. With new recruits to the club we hope to do very well in this year’s inter club league matches and of course look forward to the Q cup. We have arranged to play all of the QHotels related competitions this year and will once again work to enjoy our partnership with QHotels Telford.

The very best of luck to all at QHotels this year!

Greenkeeper's Log:

March began with some dry weather although it was rather cold. This was much needed as we began work. Please see below an overview of the work carried out on the Golf Course:
  1. The greens were hollow-tined then dressed with a top dressing sand (90 tonnes) followed by over seeding with a bent and fescue mix. This will help remove the thatch layer and make the greens drier and firmer especially in the winter.
  2. 25 popular trees were removed from alongside the 5th green and 30 conifers from the rear of the 11th green. This will allow more sunlight and air movement around the greens.
  3. Earthquaking of all 18 holes took place (tee to green).
  4. All bunkers have been edged, re-sanded with some completely dug out and started again (30 tonnes of sand was used).
  5. The pond in front of the 8th green has been successfully dredged and cleaned bringing it back to its former glory.
  6. The greens were fed with the first spring feed in March.
  7. The tees had their first feed of the year, a slow release feed which releases the nutrients as the plant requires spread over 3-4 months.
  8. Looking ahead, on May the 14th the fairways will be treated with a weed and feed and the rough treated with a selective weed killer.
  9. Also in May the greens will be scarified and top-dressed with 30 tonnes of dressing sand and this will be repeated in mid June.
  10. We are also beginning a regular programme of verti-cutting, dressing and over-seeding of tees and aprons.
  11. We are about to begin a heather plantation programme which will bring much more colour to the course, the plantation will mainly be on faces of bunkers facing down the hole. This programme will continue depending on the success over a 12 month period, all plantations will be marked G.U.R.
